Ajax Goes Derp

Typically, when I name my files, I come up with really stupid file names, and never intend to use them as the title of the picture when I post them.

However, with this drawing, the only thing I could think of was...Ajax Goes Derp. Because, he's kinda being all Derpy here. Perhaps. (For the record, the filename of this is AjaxGoesDerp.jpg). Or, well, I guess he's not really being derpy, perse. He's just looking confused as per usual. Silly Ajax. He's not particularly the sharpest tool in the shed. But GAWSH he's adorbs.

Anyway. In Jess's Quest to Draw Better Single Pictures of Her Characters, I also discovered that I really had NO good reference pictures of Ajax by himself. I had a few with him and along with his Gaggle of Goofs (aka Rage, Mac and Ricky.) but as I went through my gallery, I literally puked at the shitstorm of pictures that beheld me. Infact, there was pretty much only ONE good drawing of Ajax by himself. One out of over 800 pictures in my gallery. OH LORDY.

BUT FEAR NOT, MY FRIENDS! THE AMAZING JESS IS HERE TO MAKE ART! *the "Amazing Jess" attempts to fly, and basically lands flat on her face, because she really isn't Amazing, and she also can't fly.* Whateva, I DO WHAT I WANT! ... Anyway.

So anyway. I thought I'd draw something somewhat decent of Ajax, and one day, I doodled a picture of Ajax in this pad of mixed media paper that I simply adore, and I liked how he came out. He's a fun character to draw. Whenever I am really bored and want to doodle something, and want to doodle a guy, and think that Mac has enough pictures and needs to stop being a camera whore, I'll draw Ajax. Whenever I'm drawing him, I can just be really thoughtless and just do whatever. He really doesn't require much thinking.

Poor Ajax. I'm always implying he's an idiot. I assure you that I have many other characters who are FAR more dumb than Ajax.....*stares at Mac...* Anyway.

So one day I doodled up this picture, and thought it was cute. I dunno what he's doing. I guess something hit him on the head, or whatever. I guess I just wanted him doing something with his hand instead of in his pockets or something of that nature, so they his hand is one his head.I shoved him in a hoodie, because he wears hoodies a lot, so maybe he's trying to keep the hood on his head and it's a windy day or something.

Come to think of it, this actually kinda fails as a reference picture, because you can't even really see his hair style (or, well, lack thereof.). Not that his hair is overly complicated or anything, but you know. I'm really proud of him, because it appears he has bought some pants that actually FIT him. He's changed a little bit his his inception. I kinda wanted to give him a bit more of a rocker style. I think it suits him better, actually, and I can have more fun with it. I'm kinda thinking he's lookin' a bit chunkier than usual... Guess that could be because his mom keeps feeding him Italian food all the time XD

Fun Fact: Ajax's mom owns an Italian restaurant.

Anyway. He's actually kinda supposed to be a bit stocky anyway, so maybe I he looks right. Could also just be the hoodie he's wearing. OR MAYBE HE'S JUST ADORABLE AND SQUISHY SOFT! HIS ADORABLENESS NEVER ENDS.

Anyway, I tried to do something different with the colouring here. Or, at least the lines. Now, whenever I do black clothing (which is like, a lot.), I usually colour justtttt about to where the line is on the clothes fold, so that you, the viewer, could still see the line. Sometimes, tho, when I did this, I found the colouring just looked like crap, or something else would go wrong. It's hard to explain. So, instead of doing it that way, I thought about just using a white gel pen that I have to reink over the lines.

I honestly can't decide if it's an EPIC FAIL, or if I did something fairly smart. I dislike the line thats right in the center of Ajax's body, that one just came out too thick, and honestly, I would have liked all of the lines to come out thinner, but alas, they didn't. Some of them just look like weird shines or something. I'd like to try this again, to see if it would work a bit better.

And YES, Ajax DOES have epic green shoes. He pretty much only wears skate shoes, and I've seen a lot of really cool coloured skate shoes, so I thought green would be fun. The shoe colour in no way was supposed to match the background, that was a completely coincedence.

Speaking of background, I did that with some watercolours. The mixed media paper that I used for this drawing is actually pretty awesome for watercolours, so the background was pretty fun to do. Again, just random colours to make the picture more colourful... I wanted to use colours I haven't used a lot in backgrounds, and that means that I went ahead and used some greens and blues and yellows, because whenever I do backgrounds they always end up being red, purple and blue and pink and stuff. I didn't think girly colours suited Ajax all that much so...yes. I went with the green. And I unconsciously matched the background to his shoes.

That makes him pretty awesome.

As per usual, if you haven't noticed already, the scan is pretty gross, because I have a really gross and disgusting scanner that fails to scan any of my pictures right. I mean I guess it's not THAT bad until you fullview this picture. It's...just...just...No, Scanner. JUST NO. As per usual, the black on Ajax didn't scan in right AT ALL, and it makes the white lines look pretty bad. Once again, my scanner has to ruin all the new things that I try to improve my art. SERIOUSLY SCANNER. SERIOUSLY. WILL YOU NEVER STOP YOUR IDIOCY?

So yes. I must ask you to ignore the scan. Honestly if you don't full view the picture, the scan doesn't look AS bad, it might even pass off as decent. If only I could tell you guys all the time not to full view my drawings. Too bad, for the most part, my scanner usually doesn't even give the preview mercy....

Anyhoo, I thought this one came out pretty okay, but I should probably get around to drawing a picture of Ajax where he doesn't have something on his head (unless, of course, it's a cat. We're not too sure how a cat would get on his head, but cats have their ways.)

Fun fact: Ajax doesn't have a cat, but his parents have an evil dog who hates him and always attacks him when she sees him.
